2x12" Avantgarde Industrial/Noise 40th year Anniversary Copy, On White Vinyl - Throbbing Gristle's first album - the "Second" refers to it coming out at the end of their second year together - must have sounded like it came from another planet upon its 1977 release. Heavily influential to industrial outfits of the 1980s, who took TG's raw, experimental noise ideas and made them more accessible, "Second Annual Report" is TG at their most extreme.

From its deadpan sleeve to the peculiar choice of structuring - the album features three separate live versions of the horrific "Slug Bait" (including a wonderful clip of a DJ screaming at the audience after a Throbbing Gristle gig) and four more straightforward cuts of "Maggot Death" - "Second Annual Report" is a startling document. This reissue also includes the lengthy improvisation "After Cease to Exist" and both sides of the subversive "United / Zyklon B. Zombie" single.

Following a small quantity of limited cassette releases, 1977's The Second Annual Report was the formal debut of British industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle. (The First Annual Report was shelved by the group, and has only surfaced via unauthorized releases and bootlegs.) As with most of TG's output, and certainly everything prior to the 1978 single "United," this stuff is harsh, bleak, and utterly uncompromising. The most immediate comparison would be something like the early free-form experiments of Kluster/Cluster, but with a malicious, emphatically anti-musical intention, and partially obscured by black clouds of soot. The group's four members are credited with playing instruments such as clarinet, violin, trumpet, and guitar in addition to electronics, but nothing here ever approaches conventional melodies, and only the vaguest suggestion of a vibrating rhythm. On top of all of this is Genesis P-Orridge's psychotic rants and screams, often enhanced by echo or shrouded in distortion effects. On the first of three versions of the piece "Slug Bait," P-Orridge tells a horrifying first-person stalker story which is made all the more disturbing by an unexplained interjection of the phrase "Cat whiskers!" "Maggot Death" appears four times, once in a studio version. Only slightly less muddy than the live recordings, the track's fast pulsations and unhinged wailing come slightly closer to resembling punk, but refracted from another dimension. One of the live versions of "Maggot Death" doesn't include any instrumentation at all; instead, it's just one of the members of TG violently haranguing the crowd for a minute, giving a brief glimpse into the confrontational nature of their performances aside from the relentlessly punishing music. The highlight of the entire album, however, is its second side, which is taken up by the band's soundtrack for After Cease to Exist, a film by COUM Transmissions, the art collective which TG grew out of. The 20-minute piece is a landscape of burbling bass guitar and fizzy oscillations, surely creating a foreboding atmosphere, but one which is almost soothing compared to the sheer horror contained on the album's first side. The Second Annual Report is all but guaranteed to scare off most first-time listeners to Throbbing Gristle, but it's highly captivating in its explorations of wretched thoughts and unconventional musical techniques. It remains a fascinating document of the origins of the group, as well as industrial music as a genre.

Throbbing Gristle was formed in London, UK in 1975 out of the ashes of international performance art group COUM Transmissions. Founding members Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter, Peter Christopherson and Genesis P-Orridge, as well as artist Monte Cazazza (a collaborator and friend of the band), coined the phrase "Industrial Music For Industrial People" to describe the dehumanization and mechanization of music making they in part wanted to evoke. Aside from inventing a completely new musical genre (Industrial Music) Throbbing Gristle also founded their own record label, Industrial Records, which became home to artists such as Cabaret Voltaire, Clock DVA, SPK, William S. Burroughs and Monte Cazazza. Throbbing Gristle were dubbed "wreckers of civilisation" by Tory MP Nicholas Fairbairn because of their 1976 exhibition "Prostitution" at the I.C.A. in London. After terminating their first mission in 1981, TG split and the members went their seperate ways. Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti went on to form chris & cosey and started their label CTI (Conspiracy International) and recently carter tutti. Genesis P-Orridge and peter christopherson (Sleazy) went on to found psychic TV; later Sleazy and fellow PTV member Jhonn Balance left PTV to form Coil. Genesis P-Orridge still remains active with PTV3 and Thee Majesty. Chris Carter & Cosey Fanni Tutti are still recording, collaborating and touring and in 2001 became known as Carter Tutti. Cosey Fanni Tutti also has a successful career as an international artist (recently exhibiting at Tate Britian, Barbican, Los Angeles, Washington, Zurich). Peter Christopherson is now recording and performing live with Ivan Pavlov as Soi Song and solo as The Threshold Houseboys Choir. In 2003 Throbbing Gristle regrouped. The first new studio album from the regrouped TG was entitled 'Part Two: The Endless Not' and was released in 2007. Each of the initial CD pressings included one of a series of four different Totemic Gifts in either copper, bone, rubber or wood and the gifts were encased within the CD jewel case. The Totemic Gifts were handmade under Peter Christopherson's personal supervison in Thailand and each of the Totemic Gift CDs came in an edition of 1000. TG have also recently released a limited edition DVD boxed set titled 'T G V'. In 2007 TG performed live at the I.C.A. in London as a three-day installation entitled 'The Desert Shore'. This installation consisted of the band recording a cover version of Nico's classic album 'Desert Shore'. A limited edition of the live recording was later released on Industrial Records. In 2007 TG also performed a live 'soundtrack' concert to a series Derek Jarman films, with a full choir (conducted by Hildur Guðnadóttir) at the Turine Hall in Tate Modern. In 2008 TG performed two special concerts in Barcelona and Paris entitled 'Thirty Second Annual Report'. These concerts were commemorative recreations of their first album:'Second Annual Report'. Both concerts will be available as a framed limited edition vinyl release (777 copies) in 2008. On October 29th, 2010, Throbbing Gristle announced on their website that Genesis P Orridge had informed them that she was no longer willing to perform with Throbbing Gristle and would be returning to her home in New York. Chris, Cosey and Peter would finish the tour under the name X-TG.
