DESCRIPTION:
Acid House / Jack Trax Fave Originally Released in 1987 - Gets Repressed on Splatter Vinyl. The original title for the song 'Acid Tracks' was 'In Your Mind'. DJ Pierre had given a tape of the track to Ron Hardy to play at the Muzic Box in Chicago it then appeared on a tape Hardy had labelled 'Acid Tracks'. So this name stuck and Phuture decided to issue it under this title. According to DJ Pierre the 'acid' in the title of the tape was a reference to LSD as this was a popular drug at the club. It was not a reference to the sound of the Roland 303.

Phuture only released a handful of tracks (plus an album a full decade after their debut), but have remained a legendary act in the development of Chicago house for their stomping 1987 single "Acid Trax", the track that began and defined the acid house sound. The group was formed by DJ Pierre, synthesizer fan Spanky and Herb J in 1985 as a recording entity to produce records for Pierre to mix into his sets at several crucial Chicago clubs.

After being turned on to the high-pitched squelch of the Roland TB-303 synthesizer (marketed as a bassline machine for solo guitarists), the trio emerged from the studio with a track they called "In Your Mind". Ron Hardy previewed the track at his legendary club the Music Box - where it became known as "Ron Hardy's Acid Track" - and Phuture re-made the cut with production by Marshall Jefferson. Released on Trax Records in 1987, the single created a dividing point between the Chicago sound before and after it, with hundreds of "Acid Trax" imitations flooding the local market. After it caught on in Britain as well, the single soundtracked the wave of club madness which coalesced in the rave movement by the end of the decade.

PHUTURE is a Chicago-based Acid House group founded in 1985 by DJ Pierre, Earl "Spanky" Smith AKA DJ Spank Spank and Herb J (Herbert Jackson). Their love for House Music started back in the early 80's when friends Pierre Spanky and Herb J would go hear innovative DJ Ron Hardy play at the infamous music box in Chicago and would get lost for hours on end in his sound. Smith talked to Pierre and Herb about forming their own group, later to be named PHUTURE, so they could produce their own music and give what came about of their sessions to Hardy to play in his sets. In 1985 Spanky came across a (at the time) written off Roland TB-303 not knowing that they would go on to make history when they created a new type of sound to come out of it and Chicago. Tweaking the knobs at the same time the patterns were playing they used the 303 for something other than what it was originally made for. It was to be called later on by those who would hear it as "Acid". PHUTURE'S debut track "Acid Tracks" caused havoc on dance floors in Chicago when it was originally released in 1986 and Hardy broke it on cassette tape in his sets. It then went on to ignite a fire in Great Britain when Marshall Jefferson produced it and it was officially released on Traxx Records in 1987. That track went onto spread around the world many times over and spawned immolators and fans to this day still crediting it as the reason for them wanting to produce music or the reason for their emergence into the dance music scene. Pierre left the group in 1990 and Spanky carried on with PHUTURE with various members over the years till 1996. Then in 2014 Pierre and Spanky reunited as PHUTURE with newest member Rio "The Musician" Lee and are working on new music and an tour. Read more on Last.fm.
