DESCRIPTION:
Contemporary Jazz,& Ambient Tracks on Ths 8 Track LP - pen·ti·men·to / noun 'Reappearance in a painting of earlier images, forms, or strokes that have been changed and painted over.'

Since the release of Jon Hassell's last album in 2009, there's been an upsurge in interest in the "Fourth World" style he pioneered alongside Brian Eno way back in 1980. It seems rather fitting, then, that the 81 year-old trumpeter turned experimentalist has returned to show the pretenders how it should be done. Listening To Pictures (Pentimento Volume 1) is every bit as alluring as you'd expect, with Hassell delivering thrilling new soundscapes that pull the Fourth World template (think combinations of American minimalism, ethnic styles from around the world, advanced electronics and manipulated trumpet sounds) in a variety of directions. It's in turns trippy, hypnotic, beautiful, poignant and otherworldly, with each ambient composition being accompanied by another where Hassell draws influence from contemporary IDM or drowsy experimental jazz.

First new album in nine years by a musical visionary and hugely influential figure in new music. Forty years since its creation, Jon Hassell's "Fourth World" aesthetic remains a powerful influence on modern electronic music. Continuing his lifelong exploration of the possibilities of recombination and musical gene-splicing, fragments of performance are sampled, looped, overdubbed and re-arranged into beguiling unexpected shapes. Hassell applies the painterly technique of ‘pentimento’ to the arrangements, teasing out texture by the overlaying of sound upon sound, or a carefully timed reveal of the delicate bones pinning the frame of a track together.

Jon Hassell (born March 22, 1937, Memphis, Tennessee, died June 26, 2021) was an American musician and trumpet player. He is most well-known for his special trumpet technique learned from training with Indian classical musicians such as singer Pandit Pran Nath. Hassell learned to apply a unique style of trumpet playing by mimicking Nath's vocal stylings, and later connected with Brian Eno and began using harmonizer effects on his recordings. Hassell is also known as the creator of "Fourth World" music, which is a combination of ancient music and "futuristic" technological treatments. Hassell studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen in the 1960s and worked with Terry Riley, first appearing on record on Riley's recording of In C. He was a member of La Monte Young's ensemble. Riley, Young, and Hassell all studied with Pandit Pran Nath. Hassell co-composed with Pete Scaturro the electronic theme music for the hit television show The Practice. He has played trumpet on CD's by (a.o.): Talking Heads, David Sylvian, Peter Gabriel and k.d. lang. Read more on Last.fm.
