Rairbirds do the whole electro thing to massive effect and they do it using, in the main, 'live' instrumentation. The player line-up reads like a mini orchestra - Rairbirds tear up the rulebook here and turn electro music on its head; using keys and programming as integral part of the whole but not relying solely on digital sound generation, Rairbird show that 'electro' music can be as creative and 'genuine' as any other genre. 'Rairbirds 1' is almost unputdownable! This is one heavy electro monster! Rairbirds take electro to a different universe - it's like the whole genre has been dropped into a black hole and become re-configured, re-modelled and re-born in the shape of something that's centrally focussed but having edges that blur and constantly move thereby confusing the aural sensors. By pushing instruments to new levels, taking composition to new places and scoring hefty but empathetic arrangements, Rairbirds have torn down musical boundaries and created a thought-provoking and totally absorbing beast of an album in 'Rairbirds 1'. Rairbirds even re-write Bob Dylan's 'It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)' and amazingly turn an erstwhile folk protest song into a totally new beast for the 21st century. Recognisable only by its original lyrics, it's an absolute masterpiece of vision and artistic impressionism. They also genre-bend an old jazz classic in the form of The Original Dixieland Jazz Band's 'Tiger Rag' - superb! And so the album goes; seamlessly melding musical genre and influences into a totally new 'classic' musical art form - visionary, genre-blurring, intoxicating, invigorating - a true piece of modern musical magic to really get off on - something that can truly be enjoyed no matter what your main field of interest is - Rairbirds take what some would consider to be 'proper' music and bring it into vogue. With 'Rairbirds 1', Rairbirds have given me a whole new belief in electronic music - Rairbirds show that there can still be originality and meaningful expression in this, all too often trite, digital age.
